Annie K. Lamar

I’m a low-resource computational linguist who uses ancient and underrepresentedd languages to improve the performance and reliability of machine learning models.

Low-Resource Language Lab

I direct the LOREL Lab at the University of California, Santa Barbara, a computational linguistics lab dedicated to advancing research related to scarce, endangered, and ancient languages and connected cultural communities. We focus on developing new techniques and evaluation methods in data science and machine learning for linguistic datasets that are small, complex, or fragmented (“low-resource”).

Low-Resource Linguistics

I study embedding stability, dataset curation, and model architectures for underresourced and endangered languages.

Computational Classics

I use computational methods to study ancient Mediterranean literature, especially archaic Greek and Homeric epic.

Public Writing

Public writing is central to my work. I write about language, data, and technology for broad public audiences.

Data Science & Social Good

My Lab supports students in developing computational skills that can be applied to urgent real-world problems.
